Six oils, drawn by hand into six small glass vials — three pure Indian ouds and three musks in the Kasturi (Musk al Ghazal) tradition. It is the short way into a shelf that otherwise costs a few hundred dollars to explore one bottle at a time. A 0.3 ml draw of each — several full wearings apiece — for $99, against more than $190 if you bought the same six as separate samples. Every set ships with a $39 credit toward your first full-size bottle, so if one of the six turns out to be yours, the trial very nearly pays for itself.
We put this together for two people. The one who already suspects they like oud but has been burned by "oud" that never held a splinter of agarwood. And the one who keeps running into the word Kasturi and wants, finally, to know what the fuss is about. You get both families in one box — and, further down, the method evaluators actually use to tell six oils apart in a sitting.
Manipur Oud — the rare one. Dehn al oudh, neat distilled oud, from Manipur in India's far northeast. Manipur barely registers in the trade: India's own export framework allots it 200 kg of agar oil a year against Assam's 5,560 — under three percent of the national figure. Single origin, undiluted. It opens a little spicy over sweet wood and settles sweeter and rounder. On its own, $150 the millilitre.
Malek Oud — the smooth one. Aged Assam Hindi from a 2021 distillation. Assam is where India's oud actually lives, and the years have taken the edges off this one: deep, resinous, round, unhurried. $72 the millilitre.
Hojai Naqi Oud — the easy one. From the Hojai belt of Assam — Islamnagar, the country's distilling capital. Naqi means clean, and clean is the word: warm, balanced, none of the barnyard some Indian ouds open on. If you have never worn a neat Indian oud, start here. $64 the millilitre.
These three are not kept as open listings. They are offered quietly, on request: if one speaks to you, write to us and we will tell you what is available. All three are undiluted and unblended — what changes from vial to vial is the region and the register.
Manipur Kasturi — the deep one. A warm, dark musk in the Kasturi tradition: skin-soft, worn close, and stubbornly long — the kind still quietly there the next morning.
Assam Kasturi — the rounded one. Powdery and warm over a soft, sweet base. The most comfortable of the three to wear straight from the vial.
Tibet Kasturi — the refined one. Higher, cleaner, almost lit from within — the most lifted musk of the set, and the one that turns heads without raising its voice.
When your set ships, we email you a single-use code worth $39 off any full-size bottle on the site — on orders of $64 or more, valid for 90 days. One of the six is likely to find you; when it does, the credit is waiting.
Dispatched from Houston, Texas, tracked — usually within one to two business days (if a dispatch notice is shown at the top of the site, that timing takes precedence). All sales are final: oils that have left our hands can never again be shown unopened, so we do not resell them and cannot take them back. If you have any question at all before you buy — about the oils, the musks, or these terms — write to us first. We would far rather answer the question than have you guess.
The mistake almost everyone makes with a sample set is opening all of it at once. Six strong oils in five minutes and your nose simply closes the shutters — the technical name is olfactory fatigue, and it arrives faster than you would think. Smell well and you will tell these six apart easily. Smell greedily and they all collapse into one brown smudge.
First, forget the coffee beans. The little dish of roasted beans at the perfume counter is theatre. Coffee is just one more loud smell — some eight hundred volatile compounds — and your nose adapts to it exactly as fast as it adapted to the oud. The studies that bothered to measure it found beans do nothing that a few seconds of plain air does not do better, and often they make the fatigue worse. The real reset was on you the whole time: the clean skin of your own inner elbow, and a minute of ordinary air.
So, the method evaluators actually use:
A run that works: on the first day, the three ouds, side by side — you are learning the woody-resinous family and where each sits, the rare and spicy Manipur, the deep smooth Malek, the clean easy Hojai. On the second day, the three musks — the dark Manipur Kasturi, the rounded Assam, the lifted Tibet. Only then, on a third sitting, the two you have not been able to stop thinking about, one on each wrist, head to head. That is the moment the set is for — and the one you spend the $39 credit on.
Our assessment
What is in the Oud & Musk Discovery Set?
Six oils in six glass vials, roughly 0.3 ml of each — several full wearings apiece. Three are pure Indian oud oils: Manipur Oud (rare, spicy-sweet wood), Malek Oud (aged Assam, deep and smooth) and Hojai Naqi Oud (clean, easy Assam Hindi). Three are musks in the Kasturi / Musk al Ghazal tradition: Manipur (deep), Assam (rounded) and Tibet (lifted and refined). Bought as separate samples the six would run over $190; the set is $99, and each one ships with a $39 credit toward a full-size bottle.
How can I try your oud oils before committing to a full bottle?
This set is exactly that. Full bottles of pure oud run from $64 to $399, so exploring the shelf one bottle at a time gets expensive fast. The Discovery Set lets you wear six of our oils properly — not a quick sniff, but several real wearings each — for $99, and sends you away with a $39 credit toward whichever one turns out to be yours. It is the cheapest honest way to find your oud before you spend on the bottle.
How much oil is in each sample, and how long will it last?
About 0.3 ml per vial. These are neat, undiluted oils, not sprays, so a little goes a long way: one dab on the wrist is a full wearing that can last most of a day. At that rate a single vial is good for several wearings — enough to judge an oil properly across its opening, heart and dry-down, more than once, before you decide.
What is the best way to compare six different oils at home?
Two at a time, never all six at once, or your nose fatigues and they blur together. Dab, do not rub — rubbing shears off the opening. Give each oil hours, not seconds; the real test is the scent catching you off guard an hour later. Use fresh skin for each (both wrists, both inner elbows), and reset by breathing your own bare skin and some fresh air. Skip the coffee beans — that is a myth; coffee is just another strong smell the nose adapts to. There is a full method in the listing above.
How do I use the $39 credit?
With your order we email you a single-use code worth $39 off any full-size bottle on the site, on orders of $64 or more, valid for 90 days. Add a full bottle to your cart, enter the code at checkout, and the $39 comes off. Find the one of the six that is yours, and the credit is waiting when you come back for the bottle.
Can I buy the Kasturi (Musk al Ghazal) oils on their own?
The three musks in this set — Manipur, Assam and Tibet Kasturi, in the Musk al Ghazal tradition — are not kept as open listings. They are offered quietly, on request. Try them in the set first; if one speaks to you, write to us through the contact page and we will tell you what is available and in what size. The three oud oils, by contrast, each have their own full-size listing linked in the description above.
Do you ship the Discovery Set worldwide, and when will it arrive?
Yes. The set ships from Houston, Texas, tracked, within the United States and internationally, usually within one to two business days. If a dispatch notice is shown at the top of the site, that timing takes precedence. Either way, you will have an email with tracking the day your set leaves us.
Are sample sales final?
Yes. All sales are final: we accept no returns, opened or unopened. An oil that has left our hands can never again be shown to be unopened, so it cannot be resold and we cannot take it back. If anything about the set, the oils or these terms is unclear, write to us before you order — on something that cannot come back, we would rather answer the question than have you guess. A crushed or leaking parcel is a separate matter: photograph the box, email us the same day with your order number, and we will put it right.
